I have been elected as sec/tres for our small 8 team league. I am curious how much other leagues payout for first, second, and third places for team/indivual high game/series for the season.

I have brought it up with the league Pres., and suggested he form a prize commitie to discuss our current payouts, which I feel could be on the low side. His only reservation is that he feels that bowlers might think he is trying to get more money for himself, since he is one of the higher average bowlers on the league.


I have looked over previous years payouts, and the total monies paid out for the league champion and second place, high HS, SG, HG, high average, and most improved has almost been cut in half. What we pay the 1st place team seems a bit low as well.

On the plus side, the amount paid out for games won seems generous.

Quite a few questions from such a small league, but I'll try and be as helpful as I can.

First, about the prize committee. The President should appoint one, a minimum off three and no more than eight bowlers should be appointed, the President himself should not be on this committee.

This committee would then propose an estimated prize fund or funds to be voted upon by the membership or the board depending on how your leagues bylaws are set up to handle this. (In my leagues, each team has 1 vote, and they select from 3-5 prize lists presented for a vote.)

You didn't state how many bowlers on each team or whether or not you have a split season (1st half/2nd half).

There are different scenarios that can played out in determing a prize fund. Is the league handicapped or scratch, whether the season is split, Team roll-offs if any, and the actual amount you pay each week for your dues, the cost per game for bowling, salaries to the Sec/Treas, trophies if awarded, mid-season banquet, year-end banquet. As you see, many factors come into play and all should be looked at with great importance.

Individual awards that are paid, if approved, should be kept to a minimum, they should be a token payout, usually around 1 weeks dues for the individual games, then increment by $5 for the individual series and High average. Most improved bowler is usually given a small plaque, around $15 in cost.

As far as team standing payouts (League Champs and positions 2nd through 8th) are concerned, position in the standings should determine how much is awarded each team (points won just complicates matters and is not really necessary). a Good rule of thumb to follow for handicap leagues would be as follows:

Based on a percentage of what is allocated for Team final Standings:
25, 18, 15, 12, 9, 8, 7, 6 percent accordingly.

USBC certification fees are $10 national, up to $10 local and up to $1 for state. My particular fee is $16, ($10 nat'l, $5 local and $1 state).
Normal lineage is around $3 - $3.25 per game.
Weekly league fee's for a handicap league between $12 - $15 per bowler, and for a scratch league would be $18 - $25 pe bowler, per week.
So, the amount available for your prize fund would be, the total paid per week minus the lineage.

Our league consists of 8 teams, 4 men per team. And if I had to estimate, I'd say it is about 70% fun league, 30% competitive. The league is comprised of members from at least half a dozen small towns where some of us have to drive 30+ miles to bowl. It is a very old league, and if we don't get some new bowlers in the next few years, we could be at risk of a 6 team league, or worse, no league at all.

We bowl 2 17 week halves with a roll off/sweepers week. Our USBC cards cost $15, not sure of the break down, yet. Weekly fee is $10; 4.50 lineage, .50 sec/tres, and 5.00 prize fund. There are 2 placques, one for 1st and one for 2nd that come from the prize fund. League champs have been paid $80 ($20 per person, assuming there is no alternates that get a share), and I think 2nd place is $50. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, in team and individual awards are $15, $10, $5 respectfully. The bulk of the prize fund is paid out by team points won. I am assuming total left over prize money divided by number of games bowled equals dollar amount per game. Last season it was I believe $8.41 per game. Multiply that by the number of games team A won and get the total team money. THEN, I believe that the past sect. would figure out how many wins each bowler on the team was present for. Yeah... OK. I am not sure if BLS does this, but I know that it would be a PITA if done by hand, exactly how the previous sect. did it. It comes out that everyone gets a decent amount of money back, and like I said, it is mostly a fun league. I don't want to change things considerably that might make some of the older members lack interest and not come back.

Out end of season banquet is no longer funded by our weekly fees. Too many people did not go and didn;t like the idea of paying for something they weren't going to use. So we meet at a restaurant and we pay for our own meals, if desired, then we pass out the money. Everyone is happy.

I don't want to cause an stir in things, especially since I was just handed this league. I'd like to see it grow, become more competitive all while still having a good time.

My 750 Scratch League (4 bowlers mixed) pays $18.00 per week for 32 weeks, plus a sweeper/playoff week. We split the season into quarters with the four quarter winners playing off for the league championship. Last year first place paid $2800. All prize money was paid in place money with a total of $410 paid to individual high average, high series and high game - men and women. Although the prize list called for 1st and 2nd high games, with four 300 games, the split was only $10 each. Lineage was $7.25 per bowler per week last season. This league has some very serious bowlers with some very high averages and tends to put more money at the top. Last place (26th) paid $800 last year.
My 40 team mixed handicap league pays $11 per week, same $7.25 lineage, for 32 weeks and pays mostly point money at the end of the season. The past three years we have paid $20 each to Team High Scratch Series, Team High Handicap Series, Team High Scratch Game, and Team High Handicap Game. With a $10 token (my opinion) award to all of the individual awardees. The league champion earned an additional $100 over their point money. No matter how we present the prize options, the one with the most point money always wins, even when it makes no sense at all - like no award for the league champion!
Our USBC membership is $19.00 this year - $8 local and $1 for state.
